The Rhizophoraceae are a family of about 100 species of tropical plants. The best-known member is the mangrove tree, but most species live in land, and a high proportion of them are parasitic. They are woody plants the contain vessels and produce flowers that are clearly adapted to pollination by insects, with a nectary disc and usually five petals. They belong among the dicotyledons, and are now placed in the order Malpighiales, though under the older Cronquist system they were given their own order.
