From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A root beer float is a dessert that consists of root beer and vanilla ice cream. To make a root beer float, one scoops out the ice cream, puts it in a cup, and pours in the root beer. (This combination of root beer and ice cream creates a signature fizz.) Root beer floats are usually eaten with a spoon. A popular technique is to take some ice cream in the spoon, dip it in the root beer, and eat it. When all of the solid ice cream is eaten, the remaining mixture of root beer and melted ice cream can be drank either with or without a straw. Another is to mix the ice cream and root beer together, then drink the concoction after the ice cream has melted.
An experienced root beer float maker can proportion the ice cream and root beer exactly to keep leftover ice cream or root beer at an absolute minimum, depending upon the rate at which the float is eaten. This is a good reason to make your own root beer floats.
A&W restaurant chains are well known for their root beer floats.
