The Royal Norwegian Navy provides the coastal defense of Norway. As of 2002, the Navy consisted of approximately 8000 personnel and 40 vessels, consisting of 4 frigates, 6 submarines, 14 missile torpedo vessels, 1 minelayer, 8 minesweepers, 1 mine detection vessel, 3 landing craft, 1 support vessel, 2 training vessels. The Navy also oversees the Coast Guard, comprising 10 vessels and land-based coastal defenses containing artillery, torpedo and missile batteries.
