Rumpelstiltskin is a fictional character, the title character of the German language fairy tale Rumpelstilzchen by the Grimm Brothers.
Rumpelstiltskin is a dwarf who helps the miller's daughter after her father told the king that she could turn hay into gold. She agrees to give the dwarf her first born child in return, but after the king marries her and her first baby girl is born, she changes her mind and decides to keep the baby. Rumpelstiltskin gives her a second chance and tells her that she will be able to keep the baby if she finds out his name. After many unsuccessful attempts, one of the king's guards hears the dwarf say his own name and finally the queen can keep her child.
The name "Rumplestiltskin" is an English approximation of the original German name. The character is known by a variety of names in a number of other languages:
