Salamanca is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6097. The zip code for Salamanca is 14779.

This location was originally called Bucktooth, a name supposedly derived from a past local inhabitant. The city grew up around the junction of four railroads: the Erie, the Atlantic and Great Western, the Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh, and the Pennnsylvania. The current name is derived from a major investor in the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, Don Jose de Salamanca.

Salamanca is located on a reservation of the Seneca tribe, and the city population of about 6000 is about 13% Native American with the rest White and other ethnic groups. The city lies on the Allegheny River and is adjacent to the Allegheny National Forest.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6097 people, 2,469 households, and 1,574 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town is 85.3% White, 0.7% African American, 11.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. 1.8% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,469 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 31.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.00.
