§ is a typographical character called a section sign. It is used in various documents, particularly legal ones, to refer to a particular section of a document such as a legal code. It is frequently used along with the ¶ paragraph sign. When duplicated, as §§, it is read as the plural "sections".
It is also used to represent a typical specimen, in animals.
