Born in Edgbaston, Birmingham in 1904, Sid Field worked in North of England clubs for almost thirty years before becoming moving to London in the early 1940s. There he started work in a West End review called "Strike a New Note". Within weeks he was feted as the star of the show. He was cited by Tony Hancock, Eric Morecambe, Tommy Cooper and many others as a major influence and said by Bob Hope to be "the best comic I ever saw". He appeared in two films "London Town", which records some of his most famous routines, and "Cardboard Cavalier". However, as a club performer, he is clearly not at his best without a live audience. As he worked before the advent of television these are the only records of his performances. He died in 1947.
Sid Field should not be confused with Syd Field, author of several books on screenwriting, most notably Screenplay.
