Synon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Synon/2E was the original name of a CASE tool for the IBM System/38 and (later) AS/400 computers. It was designed in 1987 by Simon Williams, one of the original owners of the UK-based Synon Corporation.

In 1992 Synon relocated its headquarters to Larkspur, California

In 1998 Synon was acquired by Sterling Software of Plano, Texas. The tool was renamed to Cool:2E to fit in with Sterling's suite of development tools.

In 2001 Sterling Software was acquired by Computer Associates and the tool again renamed to Advantage:2E.

The main components of the tool are a database modeller, program (and sub-program templates) that can be applied over the database structures, screen editing tools and Action Diagramming tools where logic can be inserted into the functions. A Code Generator then converts the templated applications into generated RPG, COBOL or (most recently) EJB components for a web application.

While considered a legacy tool, Synon/2E is still used by mid-sized businesses, particularly in banking, logistics, insurance and healthcare worldwide.
