A brilliant movie! The latter version with Yul Bryner is almost scene for scene, line for line a remake of this 30's classic. But in many respects this almost forgotten black & white gem is superior, especially the scenes of the Battle of New Orleans, and of pirates moving through the swamps in piroques, shot with an amazing realism. This is in no way to detract from the later film, which is a brilliant classic on its own, but when I had the pleasure of catching the earlier version on a classic cable movie channel, I was stunned at how good it was. An interesting note is that one of the minor roles was played by a very young Anthony Quinn, who went on to direct the later, more well-known version. This is a true gem and one not to miss if at all possible!
