The Oldest Member is a fictional character from the short stories and novels of P. G. Wodehouse, who is widely regarded as one of the great comic writers of the 20th century, once described as "English literature's performing flea."
Dozens of Wodehouse stories center around the game of golf, and the Oldest Member is the narrator of the bulk of them. While it is enjoyable after a brisk eighteen holes to toss one against the tonsils in the clubhouse, there is always the risk that someone who has seen all and knows all may pick up on your conversation and begin to relate a story from his experience. When this is the Oldest Member, you are for it -- there is nothing to do but to let the story unwind.
He introduces the following stories:
- The Letter of the Law, A Farewell to Legs and There’s Always Golf (in Lord Emsworth and Others)
