The main sports it covers are the National Football League, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, NASCAR, golf, soccer and National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball and football.
It sponsors The Sporting News Reliever of the Year Award for Major League Baseball.
It was established in 1886.
