Thomas Chittenden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Thomas Chittenden (January 6, 1730-August 25, 1797) was an important figure in the founding of Vermont.

Chittenden was born in East Guilford, Connecticut and moved to Vermont in 1774, founding the town of Willston, Vermont. He was on a comittee to convince the Continental Congress to allow Vermont to join the Union, but this was in vain. After Vermont was denied statehood by the Continental Congress, Chittenden drew up Vermont's constution (as an independent republic) along with Ira Allen. Chittenden was head of state of Vermont from 1778 to 1789 and from 1790 to 1791. Chittenden also served as the first Governor of the state of Vermont, from 1791 until 1797. A few weeks later, he died.
