From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Touching the Void is a 2003 documentary film directed by Kevin Macdonald from the book by Joe Simpson. It is the true story of two mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who attempted to climb the Andean peak Siula Grande, which had never been climbed before, in 1985. During the descent, however, Simpson fell and broke his leg, and, although Yates attempted to help him down the peak, it was obvious that both could fall to their deaths in the attempt. Yates was forced to cut Simpson free, and watched as Simpson fell into the mists. Assuimg Simpson dead, Yates descended to their base camp. Despite the second fall, however, Simpson survived, and crawled his way to the base camp.

Touching the Void won the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film at the 2004 BAFTA Awards.
