TV Ontario is a publicly owned television station that services the Canadian province of Ontario. There is also the closely realted TFO, a French language channel. Unlike the federal CBC, TVO is largely funded by donations from the public, much like the American PBS.
TVO shows a mixture of original shows, children's programming, British imports such as Masterpiece Theater, and movies from around the world. Late at night TVO shows educational programming that is designed for teachers to tape and show in school.
TVO was created in 1970 by Education Minister Bill Davis. Its mandate was to provide educational and enlightening material for children, students, and adults. In 1995 the Mike Harris government promised to privatize TVO, but never carried through on this threat, but they did severely cut its budget.
