Visual kei is a genre within Japanese Music that is unique in that the members of such a band take on appearances that can be described to be as vibrant as their music.
Members of visual kei bands often wear white makeup, style their hair with elaborate colors and wild styles, and appear costumes that are often reflective of 17th century styles, sometimes referred to as Gothic Lolita. Although the whole appearance can appear feminine, many visual kei bands are entirely male. The music of these kind of bands are usually classified under goth, punk, or rock.
This trend was started by bands like X-Japan in the 1980s, but became popularized by 1990s bands like Malice Mizer and Dir En Grey.
