Washington State maintains the largest fleet of passenger and auto ferries in the United States. These ferries serve the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.
The current routes used to be under the control of the Puget Sound Navagation Company which later became the Black Ball Ferry Line. Black Ball sold the assets to Washington State in the 1960s, and currently operates a single route from Port Angeles, Washington to Victoria, British Columbia.
