Witwatersrand

Witwatersrand is a low mountain range which runs through Johannesburg South Africa. Translated from the Afrikaans language origin it means white water ridge. It is the geological origin of the vast gold deposits the area is famous for. Rand became the unit of currency of South Africa when it gained independence from Britain in 1961.
